The Pontefract by-election of 1872 was fought on 15 August 1872[20 5]. The byelection was fought due to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Paymaster General[20 4] of the incumbent MP of the Liberal Party, Hugh Childers. It was won by the Liberal candidate Hugh Childers.
