FEI Company (NasdaqFEIC), founded in 1971, is a leading supplier of advanced equipment to a broad range of researchers, developers and manufacturers working on the nanoscale. FEI's major markets are:

  • NanoResearch & Industry, which includes a broad range of institutes, universities, national laboratories and industrial companies primarily performing research and development in material science
  • NanoElectronics, which includes developers and manufacturers in the semiconductor, data storage and related fields
  • NanoBiology, which includes institutes, universities, pharmaceutical companies and hospitals working in life sciences research and development.

FEI's tools feature advanced ion and electron-beam technologies that enable users to characterize, analyze and manipulate structures down to the sub-Angstrom scale. The company's systems include a line of DualBeam™ systems that combine ion and electron beams in a single system to provide 3D characterization, analysis and sample manipulation, scanning electron microscopes, transmission electron microscopes, focused ion beams, and the world's highest resolution commercially available microscope, yielding powerful sub-Ångström (atomic scale) imaging and analysis.[1]

FEI maintains research and development centers in North America and Europe, and sales and service operations in more than 50 countries around the world.

History

The FEI company was founded in 1971 as a supplier to the semiconductor industry. The current company was formed by the 1997 merger between FEI and Philips Electron Optics[2], and the 1999 acquisition of ion beam company Micrion. As such, the company can trace its roots in electron microscopy to the early commercial instruments produced by Philips Electron Optics in the 1940s. On December 20, 2006 Philips Business Electronics International B.V. sold it shrares of common stock in FEI Company reducing its shareholding in FEI to zero.
