Colonel Brown Cambridge School is one of the oldest residential schools in Dehradun,Uttarakhand, India. It is an English medium school affiliated to the Indian Council of School Certificate Examination (CISCE) board of Education. The school is located in a sprawling, picturesque campus that provides an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. The buildings are heritage structures that speak volumes of the long established institution. The school provides a perfect and conducive environment for its students and has been working ceaselessly towards building a nation brimming with young talent. The school is run by the "N.S. Educational Society" registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and is recognized for the purpose of sending up students for the I.C.S.E.
In the words of our late Principal Mr. Abhai Singh, “Our aim is to impart a liberal Education, to give boys an opportunity to share experience that will bond them as human beings and not segregate them. The true test of Education is the ability to cooperate with others.”
History
It was established in 1926 by Col. William Brown, an Irishman of repute, with an enviable record of distinguished service both in the sphere of education and the British Army. After he retired from the army, Col. W.Brown did not wish to leave India, the country where he had served and grown to love. A man of vision, he decided to devote his life in the field of education. Thus, the school came into existence with Ms. Oliphant as its first Principal.[citation needed]
Management
The school is run by the "N.S. Educational Society" registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and is recognized for the purpose of sending up students for the I.C.S.E.
In 1975, Smt. Krishna Kumari, Sanjay Singh, Abhai Singh and Smt. Indu Bala Singh came into partnership to run the school. In 1978, two of the partners got a society registered in the name of N.S. Educational Society. This lead to a court case by the other partners on the grounds that they had not been inculcated into the society.[1][2]
Motto
The School motto “MAGNA EST VERITAS” in Latin translates to ‘Truth is Great’ has been a guiding light to generations of Brownians and they are proud of their Alma Mater.
Brownian philosophy
The primary objective of the school is to provide a sound education for boys. Although success in examinations is very important today, it is not the only objective of the school. Endeavour is made to develop a sense of initiative and responsibility in the boys, to teach them the values of self- discipline, self- reliance, punctuality, loyalty and the importance of physical fitness. The school expects the child to follow a very simple dictum, “Eat well, sleep well, work hard, play hard, above all be a gentleman.”[citation needed]
Academics
The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi. English is the medium of instruction in the school.
The School believes in a holistic learning approach by giving equal importance to scholastics and co scholastic areas. Our curriculum in scholastic areas is based on core subjects. It focuses not just on providing knowledge, but also on the development of concepts, skills and ideas, thus taking it to the pinnacle of quality.
A variety of teaching-learning methodologies, integrated with technology, are used to give students a holistic education making them independent, life-long learners and above all responsible citizens of the globe. Equal attention is given to the development of the body, mind and spirit.

Striving hard behind these ‘Gentlemen’ of the future is the earnest effort of the teaching fraternity of Col. Brown Cambridge School. Teachers provide students with individual attention necessary to help them achieve their goals. Critical judgment is encouraged so that students can discuss topics with coherent arguments supported by evidence. Moreover, teachers motivate and understand their pupils and have a deep knowledge of the subject.

- The Preparatory school classes are: II III, IV, V, VI and VII
- The Senior school classes are: VIII, IX, X, XI and XII
- The Headmaster sees to the daily routine.
- The Academic Session commences in April each year.
House system
The House system is an integral and vibrant part of the school’s culture. It helps in developing positive self-esteem and value of the ethos of the School community. It also gives opportunities to the students to realize every individual’s full potential by participating in various Inter House competitions whether in Academics, Sports or Co- curricular activities. The students are distributed into three main houses, Principal House (green), Head Master House (red) and Bursar House (yellow).
Sports and physical fitness
Physical activity through sports and games is an essential ingredient of the personality development of every student. We believe that academics and sports are compatible and complementary in realizing the child’s full potential. Activity on the play field develops the qualities of teamwork, leadership, dedication, discipline, self-confidence and self-esteem. They get ingrained in the psyche and enable each student to overcome the trials and tribulations of life. Sports equip scholars to face the challenges of an increasingly competitive world.
In the initial years children are encouraged to joyously participate in running, swimming and freehand gymnastics. As they grow the school ensures that their curriculum is upgraded accordingly. Special training regimes are individually developed by highly qualified and experienced instructors keeping in view the ability, talent and the potential of every child. Social service and SUPW

The school has contributed time and again to areas struck with disaster and natural calamities, bringing the boys closer to reality and the needs of people. SUPW grades are compulsory to secure a pass certificate in the Board Examinations.
