Natalism is the belief that human reproduction is the basis for individual existence. At a concrete level, the word is often used to describe government policies that are pro-birth, and aimed at increasing a country's population. The term is taken from the Latin adjective form for "birth", natalis.

In an article on December 7, 2004, New York Times journalist David Brooks ascribed the relatively high birthrate of the United States (as opposed to Europe) to social groups with "natalist" attitudes, with possible effects on the future of the economy and the political balance in the U.S. The article is considered an early analysis of the Quiverfull movement.[1]
